Joanna Strand’s Flying Transatlantic project took off in an unexpected way last month in hurricane-stricken New York. The two concerts at the Metropolitan Room were cancelled due to the transport network shutting down on the 28th October in preparation for Sandy’s arrival on the 29th. Luckily the Sunday night concert was quickly rearranged at the Bemelman’s Bar of the New York’s top cabaret venue The Carlyle Hotel. There, Joanna Strand and her team shared a concert with the fabulous and very gracious Jim Caruso and Billy Stritch, who despite the threat of the hurricane defied the looming storm so as not to disappoint their public on the opening night of their new season.
Thankfully all was not lost then thanks to these amazing New Yorkers and their witty and slick cabaret act. Joanna Strand went down a storm (pardon the pun) and will return to New York on December 5th where she will be appearing at Feinstein’s with John Bailey on piano, Nick Pini on Double Bass, Romano Viazzani on accordion and New Yorker Ziv Ravitz on drums before Michael Feinstein himself takes to the stage later that evening.
Joanna Strand recently appeared as Emma in Jekyll and Hyde at London’s The Union Theatre, to great critical acclaim, and as Sharon Graham in the Broadway transfer of Terrence McNally’s Master Class at the Vaudeville Theatre. She also enjoyed playing Madame Giry in Phantom of the Opera, at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. She has appeared as Dolly in Hello Dolly, and Mabel in Pirates of Penzance with WLO as well as appearing in numerous theatres and opera houses including Bath Theatre Royal, Garsington Opera, Opera Grange Park and Opera Holland Park and gave the European premier of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus and Euridice at the Tete a Tete Festival at The Riverside Studios, Hammersmith last summer. She made her jazz debut premiering some of the Blake settings by English Jazz composer Michael Garrick with the Royal Academy Big Band, while studying classical voice at the Royal Academy of Music. She regularly appears as a jazz-cabaret artist in London, recently playing to sold out houses at The Jermyn Street Theatre, Leicester Square Theatre and The Forge, Camden. She has also performed at The Jazz Cafe, Royal Festival Hall, Barbican amongst other leading concert halls and jazz clubs. She looks forward to appearing at The Pheasantry on January 18th with her new show ‘Delirium’ and at Pizza Express Dean Street and Maidstone February 7,8 and 9th, where she will be dueting with the jazz legend, Freddy Cole. She recently released her album Fly Transatlantic with NMP records.
