From January 16 to 18, in Novoli, in the province of Lecce, there will be celebration of the “Feast of Fire” in honor of Sant’Antonio Abbot. The event is unique mainly because the bonfire, which the locals call “the Fòcara”, reached extraordinary proportions (with a height of about twenty-five meters and a diameter of about twenty) and its preparation is part of a ritual passage, developed in close connection with the natural surroundings. In fact, as Eugenio Imbriani explains in the website dedicated to the event, “we must wait for the pruning of the vines to recover the material necessary for the construction of Fòcara; fagots, tied in the fields, are transported in the large square on the outskirts of the village where they will be carefully stacked one by one up” to form the pyre will be lit in honor of the saint. This year will participate a high number of international artists and groups, to sugellare the importance of an event that is becoming increasingly important not only for the inhabitants of the place. In fact, during these three days, Novoli will become the venue of a real world music festival, hosting, among others, such international stars as Tinariwen, Omar Souleyman (expected January 16), Bombino (January 17) and prominent members in our music scene, as Motel Connection (January 18) and BandAdriatica (January 17).
The concerts will take place in Piazza Tito Schippa and the full program can be found here.
