A national accordion symposium, which will attract and gather, accordionists from all over the United States. It’s the “Thinking Outside the Squeeze Box” is the name of the event, which will take place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, September 23rd to 25th thanks to the National Czech and Slovak Museum collaboration and the Library’s BrewNost. “The accordion is experiencing a creative renaissance with players mixing traditional music with new approaches. The symposium’s goal is to honor the past and pave the way for future innovation. This weekend symposium is a celebration of the accordion” explains the event organizer, Jim Jacobmeyer. The event will include a series of meetings and workshops held by American artists, dealing with different topics: from the Irish music session held by Roxanne Oliva to Billy Wilson, who will stretch the horizons of the accordion, from Paul Rogers, who will share a few tips on the techniques for rock accordion to reach Renèe de la Prade and her introduction on the cajun accordion and also Ron Borelli, who will teach the techniques of improvisation and not least John Cunningham, his workshop will focus on writing for the accordion, sharing different approaches to writing and creating your own style. Combined with the symposium, concerts and jam sessions will enliven the stay of the many participants.
