Joanna Strand

Joanna Strand takes successful British Cabaret Flying Transatlantic to New York this autumn. It has been a busy year for Joanna Strand after launching Flying Transatlantic at the Jermyn Street Theatre in February and then recording the eponymously titled album over the winter. The album was launched at The Forge in Camden, London on 11th September 2012 with great success and then the show opens in New York’s Metropolitan Room on 28th and 29th October 2012. The same group of musicians which featured amongst others Asaf Sirkis on Drums, John Baily on Piano, Nick Pini on Double Bass and Romano Viazzani on accordion accompanied Joanna in another cabaret this spring entitled Thanks for the Memory tracing the life of Hollywood composer Ralph Rainger. Both cabarets were critically very well received but more impressively was the fact that Miss Strand managed to do this whilst appearing in two of London’s current musicals. She appeared as Emma in Jekyll and Hyde at London’s The Union Theatre, to great critical acclaim, and as Sharon Graham in the Broadway transfer of Terrence McNally’s Master Class at the Vaudeville Theatre. Only last year she was playing Madame Giry in Phantom of the Opera, at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. Miss Strand has many credits to her name. She has appeared as Dolly in Hello Dolly, and Mabel in Pirates of Penzance with WLO as well as appearing in numerous theatres and opera houses including Bath Theatre Royal, Garsington Opera, Opera Grange Park and Opera Holland Park and gave the European premier of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus and Euridice at the Tete a Tete Festival at The Riverside Studios, Hammersmith last summer.

Flying Transatlantic CDHer effortless jazz interpretations belie a classical background. She made her jazz debut premiering some of the Blake settings by English Jazz composer Michael Garrick with the Royal Academy Big Band, while studying classical voice at the Royal Academy of Music. Miss Strand is definitely on the ascendancy. Watch this space as I think we’ll be hearing much more about her in the future.

John Bailey and Romano Viazzani will be alongside Joanna Strand in New York along with local musicians Saadi Zain and David Silliman.
