Nonesuch Records has announced the release of the new album by Chris Thile, the mandolin player and leader of the Punch Brothers, one of the most interesting bands of the new-American folk scene. The disc is an experiment, as well as an homage to Bach and a musical tradition far from the fields in which the chameleon Thile had so far moved. It is entitled “Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1 “and includes three compositions for violin: Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001, Partita No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002, and Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003. Thile explains his interest in the German composer: “Bach was my first experience with classical music,” especially through the Goldberg Varietions of Glenn Gould. “Goluld plays with the same kind of rhythm that I associated only to non-classical music: music with a groove that makes you move. Gould played this music as my heroes were playing the fiddle tunes … and I began to devour all the Bach that my hands could play”.
