D'altro cantoIt just came out, for editions Egea, the book “D’altro Canto. Contemporary scenario of umbrian traditional music”, edited by Daniele Cestellini, Antonello Lamanna and Giancarlo Palombini. It is a multifaceted contribution of the size of the contemporary music of the oral tradition of Umbria, investigated as part of a multimedia documentation, including photographs, audio and video recordings. The book has the merit of being organized according to a multi-disciplinary, as it is the result of the convergence of ethnomusicology and ethno-linguistic character studies, that taken together are able to define a profile of the production of oral tradition expression of this region. Part of the video recordings were transferred to a documentary, through which the authors were able to reconstruct the cultural ferment that affects Umbria and, above all, the activities of many players operating – often with different approaches and purposes – as part of the traditional music. For this reason have found space “traditional” singers, “storyteller”, improvisers poets, fraternities, but also scholars, observers, researchers and, above all, artists that arise between the revival of traditional modules and original compositions (among the latter we can remember Massimo Liberatori and the group Sonidumbra). As regards, however, the CD that accompanies this book, we have to point out that the intention of the authors was to select the music still documented, live in the region. For this ladder contains tracks recorded exclusively on the field, or “running”, which include some songs of “May”, starlings, “passions”, etc. The book was presented Thursday, February 26 at Santa Cecilia auditorium in Perugia. Appointment was attended by the authors and various authorities, several musicians, among which Ambrogio Sparagna and Lucilla Galeazzi.
