The volume edited by Giorgio Adamo is dedicated to Carpitella and De Martino ship in Basilicata (30 September to 31 October 1952), which represents “the birth of Italian ethnomusicology ” – as you can read in the presentation – “because for the first time were carried out field recordings according to organically unit criteria”.

Documents registered, converged in the Raccolta 18 of the Archives of Ethnomusicology, “reveal a unimaginable world of musical quality and wealth: extraordinary female voices, accordion players, singing on the bagpipes and the cupa cupa, in the most varied repertoire, from lullabies to funeral lamentations, from work songs to begging songs, from the tarantella to children’s songs. The music pervaded in all its essential moments the lives of those farmers and shepherds who experienced a surprising capacity for joy, party, joke, humor, creativity and poetry”.
