The publisher Squilibri published “Advancements. Miners, blacksmiths and workers in the field research and archives”, edited by Guido Bertolaso. The book – to which are attached various multimedia documents, collected in a cd and a dvd – consists of several essays (written by Angelo Bendotti, Graziella Pedretti, Carolina Lussana, Maria Costa, Maddalena Cerletti, Alberto De Cristoforo, Primo Ferrari, Bruno Pianta and Roberta Valtorta), who have as a reference point in the ethnographic research conducted by Bruno Pianta in 1972 on the miners of Valtropia. The songs and music play a fundamental role in this cultural context, especially in reference to the repertoire of Bregoli family, whose members have passed on not only the techniques of traditional designs but also a composite language related to improvisation and the creation of new expressive forms. As you can read in the notes of presentation of the book, as the facility is generally tied to a rigorous historical reconstruction, the purpose of this survey is “to evaluate the strength and value of the culture of iron in the horizon of our times”. For this the DVD was recorded a ballad “inspired by ‘radio ballads’ made by Ewan Mac Coll, Peggy Seeger and Charles Parker for the BBC in 1958″. And for that, finally, the book contains in-depth reflection on over forty years of research on the specific issue of the culture of iron in Lombardy, continuing a perspective study initiated by Roberto Leydi in the early seventies with the establishment of the Servizio cultura del Mondo Popolare (at the Lombardy region) and continued with the activities of AESS-Archive of Ethnography and Social History.
