Leadbelly AccordeonIt was announced the nominations for the “fRoots album of the year”, the magazine fRoots, led by Ian Anderson, has published about thirty years. This moment is one of the most important, if not for the artists, for journalists and for those involved in world music and popular music. Especially because it is a way to take stock and assess what has been done during the year and if the artists, projects, works and publications that have been dealt with, are the right ones. The most important ones, the most followed and analyzed in an international scenario. Because fRoots – as has often been said in this section – is one of the most authoritative voices of world music, and a comparison with the content that collects and processes the magazine is always important, to ensure readers a look not only local and possibly not provincial. Scrolling down the list of nominations, meets the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino with “Forty”, the album of the fortieth anniversary of the band, also popular in Italy, we recently discussed in these pages. It is the only “concession” to the Italian productions, because all the other nominations are referred to international productions. Among which is that of the British singer and researcher Sam Lee with “The fade in time”, but also that of Vieux Farka Toure & Julia Easterlin with the album “Touristes”, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba with “Ba power” and Emily Portman with the album “Coracle”. Among the compilations and reissues could not miss “Lost and found” by Buena Vista Social Club, “The Smithsonian Folkways Collection” by Lead Belly and one of the most interesting albums of the last few months: “Fatteliku. Live in Athens 1987” by Youssou N’Dour & Le Super Etoile de Dakar.
