Concerts all over the world, music Festivals, Tv and Radio Programmes, recordings and partnerships with International celebrated musicians. Luciano Biondini, born in 1971, is today one of the most appreciated accordionist.
1. Luciano Biondini started to play his first accordion when he was a child and after a classical training he decided to focus on Jazz. Why did you choose it?
I’ve always studied classical music but I’ve always loved improvisation as well. I’ve enjoyed varying everything I played everyday to adapted pieces and add my personality. I think this is the reason of my musical history. It’s not a choice but a way of being. This the essence of Jazz as well.
2. You have been awarded of National and International Prizes since you was young: Trophée Mondial de l’Accordéon, Premio Internazionale di Castelfidardo, Premio Luciano Fancelli, Premio Internazionale di Recanati. What are your best memories of the past?
I think… light-heartedness that has characterized my youth and old friendships which are still alive.
3. Coming from a small town in Umbria you have become a sensitive and creative artist, a highly respected Italian player and an accordionist working with great and famous musicians all over the world. What results are you proud of and what are your next aims?
Prizes apart, I’m very proud of my chances to express my essence, to be a musician and live in full this privilege which is not a job for me but a great opportunity to know the deep meaning of freedom.
4. Among your several and well-known partnerships there are: Gabriele Mirabassi, Ivano Fossati, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Enrico Rava. Could you choose just one musician and tell us some pleasant moments of your common works?
All are important. I’m very lucky, because I have the opportunity to work and grew with extraordinary musicians and wonderful men. I’ve recently spent a whole day recording with Ennio Morricone. His modesty has impressed me and I can’t forget when, during a pause, he came back with cookies to eat together soon after.
5. Luciano Biondini is a complete artist. You have played in several theatres all over the world but you have also took part to some radio and television programmes with your accordion. Many musicians prefer a direct contact with their audience and usually snub new media. What do you think about it?
The problem are not due to mass media but to the way people use them. For me, having a concert means playing my music in front of people who have come just to here it. When you take part to a tv programme they probably ask for a precise piece and they tell you how to play it. There’s a big difference. You are not free to express yourself like in a concert and live audience plays a special role.
6. Luciano Biondini has played in several International Festivals included the Festival dei Due Mondi, a prestigious event which has been taking place in your birthplace, Spoleto, for 50 years. In Italy we usually hear of restrictive measures and cultural events cuts. Are you optimistic about the future?
Unfortunatly it depends on our future Government’s good intentions. Anyway we should do something! Art is a fortune we cannot renounce and we defend our freedom by protecting art.
7. How do you describe your music and what are your messages for future generations?
I’ve been cooperating in several, different projects for years. I love entering apparently distant worlds with my musicality. The musical concept links all these planets, as well as the strength of dialogue which makes different natures get closer by shaping them. The same is in life where we can open ourselves to the Different and discover the others’ qualities in order to enrich ourselves.
8. What are you working to in this moment? Could you reveal in advance your future plans?
My last CD “Face to Face” with the trumpet player Fabrizio Bosso has just come out for Abeat Records. There’s an other one with the pianist Rita Marcotulli and the saxophonist Javier Girotto, is titled “Variazioni su tema” published by Egea. I’m recording again in some months the 2nd CD with the tuba player Michel Godard and the percussionist Lucas Niggli. The CD is coming out next Autumn with Intakt Records. The first one, “What is there what is not”, was published last year, with Intakt Records as well.
