On stores now the latest CD by Philippe Thuriot.
It’s called “Johann Sebastian Bach – Goldberg Variations” and it has an interesting history.
The idea of playing Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” on accordion emerged in Philippe Thuriot during the tour of “Pitié” (2008), a dance performance by Alain Platel.
For this dance show, Fabrizio Cassol rewrote J.S. Bach’s “St Matthew Passion” for three singers and a contemporary orchestra. Philippe Thuriot felt in love with the score by Bach and to decipher the score of the “Goldberg Variations” was his thread running through the whole tour that lasted for two years and ended with his first “Goldberg Concert”.
The “Goldberg Variations” didn’t let Philippe Thuriot go away. His reflection, then, moved on accordion. Can accordion leave this masterpiece intact, technically, musically and in terms of sound? The result was that the passionate temperament of accordion and accordionist must be tempered and the guide line is Bach’s music.
