Umbria Folk festival 2014Finally was announced the program of Umbria Folk Festival, the festival dedicated to the popular music. This year we are at the fourth edition of the event and requires the presence of internationally renowned artists. As indeed it were the artists who graced the stages of the festival since 2011, allowing Umbria Folk Fest stand out in Umbria for being able to blend harmoniously with the right dose of entertainment and culture, research and revived. Just scroll through the names of the artists who performed in the first year to understand how, in such a short time, the festival that take place in Orvieto – in the framework of the project is also born the Orchestra Giovanile di Musica Popolare, of which Ambrogio Sparagna is director – has become one of the most important at the national level: Almamegretta, Peppe Servillo, Mohammad Reza Mortasavi (virtuous Tombak and Daf, the traditional Persian percussion instruments), Enzo Avitabile and Bottari (that year he performed at the Umbria Jazz), Scialimati Show band & Revue, Goran Bregovic Wedding & Funeral band, Alessandro Mannarino, Francesco De Gregori, Peppe Barra and Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare, Gai Saber, Lucilla Galeazzi, Raffaello Simeoni, Jureduré, The Orchestraccia, Ginevra Di Marco, Riccardo Tesi, Vinicio Capossela e la Banda della Posta. And this year, despite the grip of the crisis – which the organizers have tried to cope with the help of a crowd-funding campaign still in progress – the festival promises to be a great program, from which shows the name of the guitarist Bombino. This, as readers of these pages know by now, is a Berber guitarist who has earned the nickname “the Hendrix of the desert” and has attained a well-deserved international recognition to coincide with “Nomad”, his latest album, produced by Dan Auerbach, the guitarist and singer of the American rock duo the Black Keys. Among the foreign guests there are also Israeli singer Asaf Avidan (who will perform August 21, the same night of Bombino) and Hevia (scheduled for August 23). The latter became famous in the late nineties (his first album, Tierra de nadie, 1998 is sold in Spain alone a million copies) as a virtuoso of the gaita, the bagpipe that has transformed in a midi version. As regards, however, the Italian scene that will be presented in Umbria Folk Fest, over the Apulian Caparezza rapper (who will be performing August 20), the program provides – in addition to Umbria MEI Folk contest for emerging bands and Folktrakking, music, traveling around the cliff – a performance of The Orchestra Giovanile di Musica Popolare, directed by Sparagna (will be performing August 23) and the show Mamma Roma Addio. The latter sees Luca Barbarossa together three of the most important folk groups from Rome, Bandajorona, Ardecore and Il muro del canto, that propose the classical repertoire of the Roman folk song.
