On March 19, in Venice, Island of San Giorgio, will host a concert by Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, mohan veena player, the Indian guitar became famous in the West, especially in recent decades. The concert is part of the initiatives organized by the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) of Giorgio Cini Foundation, which provides a full calendar of events – seminars, meetings, concerts and shows – in an encounter with expressions musical “other”: from India to Turkey and Korea. Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt became famous mainly thanks to his collaboration with American guitarist Ry Cooder, with whom he published “A Meeting by the River”, the album won a Grammy Award for best world music album in 1994. But his experiences related to the contamination of music have not exhausted with this record. Indeed Bhatt has worked with other artists of the scenario of especially American pop music, among which Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas. During the concert to the Island of San Giorgio will perform with Krishna Mohan Bhatt at the sitar and Nihar Mehta at the tabla, who will accompany the sinuous sound of his guitar. About which we must give some basic information. As the various sources which may consult in internet says, it is an instrument halfway between the Spanish guitar and the sitar. Its name comes from its inventor, who has made some changes to the classical structure, changing the arrangement of strings and its tuning. As regards the technique of execution, the most obvious reference is slide guitar, widely used in various kinds, even if the mohan veena has a sound very recognizable, mainly due to the vibration of the strings of resonance.
