Vérité Cabaret Presents

On the banks of the Seine

Strumenti & Musica - On the banks of the SeineA dark & beautiful cabaret-with-a-difference starts to unfold …

Fancy a stroll around the back streets of Paris, a tour of underground Buenos Aires and some show-stopping chansons without having to cross the English Channel? Bi-lingual cabaret singer-songwriter Bethany Jameson and master accordionist Romano Viazzani are launching their stunning new Vérité Quartet and are proud to welcome Declan Daly on Violin and Ben Hazleton on Double bass.

The show was originally created and performed as a commission for London Bastille Day Festival in 2009, by Viazzani and Jameson. It was initially homage to Edith Piaf, with and storytelling in English to take the mainly English speaking audience on the journey of the songs. The show was, and continues to be very popular with both critics and audience as a duo concert. It is now a full Cabaret evening, taking inspiration from the great Cabaret and Variety songwriters, old and new: Fascinating AIDA, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Victoria Wood, Doris Day and Ute Lemper..

The show explores a wider range of gorgeous French chansons (Piaf, naturellement, but also Brel, Lama, Barbara, Greco …) and sultry Tangos by Piazzolla and Galliano, as well as the new cabaret songs. Viazzani has created stunning new arrangements of all the songs for the quartet, and composed quirky and in some cases powerful music for the new songs, with some beautiful contributions from Karen Street. And the new song ‘Maisie’s Virtue’ includes some close harmonies for the band’s three male voices. Bethany Jameson’s lyrics are witty and thought provoking, and with just a touch of wickedness: ‘Just Her. Younger Man’, from last year’s show The Accordionist, was judged ‘a showstopper’ by London Fringe Theatre and is regularly demanded by audiences as an encore. Bethany adds “Our new songs cover lost love, politics, the beauty products scandal, looking after ageing parents and picking up younger men in bars! Expect gorgeous music, plenty of retro glitz and glamour, gentle (and some not-so-gentle), witty new lyrics and tunes you will hum all the way home.’

Lyric Theatre co-owner, Niki McCretton, said, “We’re really excited and proud to be able to have this enchanting and unique show here at The Lyric. We are pleased to be able to present a matinee performance as well as the evening show by popular request from local people.”
