Founded in 1970 by Alain Danielou in collaboration with the International Institute for Comparative Music Studies and Documentation of Berlin, the IISMC promotes the knowledge of the highest forms of expression of different musical cultures organizing research, seminars and conferences. Since 1979, thanks to an initial contribution of Unesco, is also dedicated, under the direction of Ivan Vandor and then Francesco Giannattasio, to music education by offering theoretical and practical courses dedicated to instrumental and vocal traditions of the different parts of the world. Became in 1999 one of the Institutes of the Giorgio Cini Foundation, the IISMC is now directed by Giovanni Giuriati.
The Scientific Committee is composed by Francesco Giannattasio (Chairman), Maurizio Agamemnon, Vito Di bernardi, Serena Facci, Giovanni Giuriati.
