Patrizia Angeloni - Conservatorio di LatinaKOSMOS I – Rivolto a principianti in età infantile, è suddiviso in tre grandi sezioni (Creazioni I, Puzzle, Ritmi, Percorsi e Note).

Kosmos (a pag.

Kosmos - Creazioni ICREAZIONI among the secrets of KOSMOS

As we have already seen in the previous article, KOSMOS considers the skills of the player in their objective substance: different elements, technical and musical, connected in network to each other, whose meaning and mastery depend on this indissoluble connection.

A certain didactic tradition wants all the components of the instrumentalist’s skills to be broken down into segments ordered from easy to difficult and from simple to complex, often separating those elements which in musical experience are absolutely inseparable and, if separated, would lose their sense and effectiveness (think for example of the separation of a crescendo, considered mechanically, from the linguistic and musical context from which it is born and of which it carries meaning).

Also the acquisitions of neuroscience have demonstrated what every musician already knows: for the human nervous system the musical experience is a systemic whole and in childhood it is a priority to orient the teaching methodology in this sense. Therefore it is necessary to identify the components of our competences (in our case the basic technical, specific for each instrument, and musical, common to all instruments, which the reader will find listed on p. 13 of the book for the teacher) and in selecting a series of musical materials, activities and educational paths that allow you to work on all the points of the network (also suggested by the book for the teacher).

It is therefore necessary to work on all the elements, or on a series of them, in a circular and recursive way: through different activities we return to work on the same elements, by varying the level of deepening and consolidation and so as to influence all aspects considered even when working on only one.

The methodological system of the whole Kosmos is based on this concept. The teacher is required to work freely, but also with the inevitable responsibility to select materials and activities and to integrate the suggested paths with all that series of direct pedagogical actions that constitute the essence of the authentic didactic (and human) relationship with the student and who cannot find space in a book, even if they are indispensable.

Patrizia Angeloni - Conservatorio di LatinaKOSMOS I – Aimed at beginners in childhood, is divided into three large sections (Creations I, Puzzles, rhythms, Paths and Notes). Let us see them, while being aware that not everything here can be fully explained.

CREAZIONI I (Creations I) – We do not find notes, nor staves, but a series of deliveries that the teacher will use to guide a first exploration of the accordion, in its technical basics, and in a first contact with the sound and its parameters.
The teacher“tells” and calls for a series of actions that guide the student’s searching to a dynamic knowledge. These actions does not need to read during the classroom activities; in the work at home the student will simply remember them or, if able to read them, read them independently, find the references of the experience conducted in class with the teacher and, possibly, with other students.

Why some calls for actions to listen to and no notes to read?
It is important that the first contact with the instrument takes place through a direct contact with the sound conducted on the sensomotor plane, without the mediation of reading –writing.

What’s Creazioni about?
The requested actions guide the discovery of the technical basics that will be gradually taken up and developed through notes, exercises and small pieces in the other sections of this first book and the second one. The various aspects explored are proposed in order of priority, always crossing the priority technical aspects (use of the bellows, for example) with the sensorial and musical aspects. So we start from the sound research, exploring durations, dynamics and pitch of sound, always involving the listening sphere, parallel to the orientation on the instrument, the configuration of the geography of keyboards. So, here are Creations for sound and for bellows; for fingers and ear, for hands and keyboards, for fingers and for body, for characters.

Why are actions called Creazioni? (Creations)?
A correct and coherent musical formation requires that every executive act, from the single experiment with a single note to the most complex concert repertoire, be perceived and managed in its authentic essence: that of expression and communication, trace of an original personal creation and not as an exhibition of skills for demonstrative and competitive purpose. Neuroscience also shows us that, even when we take a step already studied and consolidated, our nervous system manages this action as a new construction, as a new research.
So every experience must be lived as a research in progress and a personal creation. This is the basis for a healthy relationship with oneself, with one’s actions and with music, thus helping to avoid the performance anxiety that sees its roots in times and places very far from the stage. In this case, the requested actions often require a small extemporaneous composition, so the word Creation is very appropriate.

Why is it necessary to work immediately on the orientation and geography of keyboards?
The technical mastery of keyboards depends first of all on a sensory awareness that connects movement with the physical space of keyboards and the height of sounds and at the same time lays the foundations for the articulations of sound and some fingers. Every instrumentalist knows that errors often depend on basic gaps in this sense: for example, you spend hours studying the accuracy of a jump from one note to another or trying to “catch” a certain note placed in an “unknown” place for our body, without realizing that everything would be easier, safer and immediate if a basic mastery of spatial orientation had developed on keyboards.
Kosmos proposes different paths to build and consolidate the orientation on keyboards: in Creations (Books I, II), in the Teaching Book, and through theorganization of the musical materials in Books I, II, III.

Isn’t working on sound and its quality too early in childhood?
It is now known that sound quality is indispensable to the functionality of the nervous system and that it is driving for all the technical skills of the instrumentalist. Given these principles, all sensory and sensomotor aspects constitute the essential and priority dimension not only for the development of children’s abilities, but for their own lives and for all learning. Therefore sound work can only be a priority, especially when, as in the case of KOSMOS, it is proposed not as a task to be performed passively but as a continuous search.

So it is necessary to have completed the entire Creations section before facing the following sections?
All actions requested by Creazioni are designed to be used in different ways and times: the teacher will decide the optimal use. In the concept of Kosmos it can be useful to work exclusively to the Creazioni until the student has acquired the background mastery that allows him to manage the bellows and the sound, in a good balance with the fingers on the keyboards, even for a few sounds. Kosmos (at Teaching Book, p. 25) recommends to start from the next two sections, also at the same time, and to return or complete Creazioni recursively, in parallel with the study of the other sections.
Note how Kosmos II opens with Creazioni II, which take over (sound quality searching, by the way, never ends!), consolidate and deepen the contents of Creazioni I.

For reasons of communicative immediacy, Kosmos I and II, intended for young people, are expressed in Italian. The translation of the texts, in English, for the use of teachers who want to adapt the text to the needs of their students, can be found in the Teaching book. Kosmos III is expressed both in English and in Italian.

In the next article we will meet Puzzle, the second section of Kosmos I.
